Start Testing! Google Website Optimizer Works

September 24, 2008

Want to make web design and development decisions easier? Then start testing!

In a recent test, we utilized Google Website Optimizer to see if we could improve the conversion of a key goal (requesting a catalog) on an ecommerce web site. We identified what we believed to be the obstacles on the the current request a catalog page and hypothesized that we could improve conversion by about 25% by implementing these changes.

So How Did We Do?

We improved conversion by 55.1% with a 98% chance of outperforming the original (i.e. control) page. Not bad for only a couple hours of work.

Google’s Website Optimizer is an easy to use tool that helps turn subjective decision making into straightforward objective decisions that eliminate problems related to the HIPPO. The HIPPO refers to the Highest Paid Person in the room who oftens controls the final decision based on their personal perspectives and opinions. Now with proper testing methods like this you can focus on what gets users to take the desired action and ultimately leads to success metrics like improved conversion, increased average order value, more time spent on the site (i.e. impressions), and etc.
